A pair of football boots from Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi was auctioned for charity earlier this year. The pair of football boots was sold for a whooping $173,000 in April.

The football boots were sold to raise money for the Artand Health programme fromValld’HebronUniversity according to auction house Christie’s. The sale was a record for a pair of football boots as confirmed by Christie’s. The Messi boots were initially displayed at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.

The pair of football boots auctioned was worn by Messi when he broke the record for the number of goals scored for a single club in December 2020. Messi scored his 644th goalfor Barcelona on December 22, 2020 to surpass the record set by Brazilian football legend Pele several years ago.

Pele, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, is widely regarded as one of the best players to ever grace the football pitch. He scored 643 goals for Brazilian giants Santos for a period of 18 years. The Brazilian football idol played for Santos between 1956 and 1974. Messi was able to break the record in 17 seasons.

German football legend Gerd Muller was the closest to breaking the record set by Pele before Messi achieved the feat last year. Muller netted 565 times for Bayern Munich over a period of 15 years. The 1974 World Cup winner featured for the Bavarian giants between 1964 and 1979.

The top three on the list of all-time scorers for a single club are Messi, Pele and Muller. Fernando Peyroteo is now fourth on the list due to his scoring prowess for Portuguese Super League giants Sporting Lisbon several decades ago. Peyroteo scored 544 goals for Sporting Lisbon between 1937 and 1949. Josef Biscan has 534 goals for Slavia Prague from the Czech Republic.
